Kristen Bell, Non-Alcoholic Beer Spokesperson?
If Any Publicity Is Good Publicity, Then It Was A Good Week For N/A Beer
During an appearance recently on the Kelly Clarkson Show, actress and mother of two, Kristen Bell, revealed that the two daughters she shares with husband and fellow actor, Dax Shepherd, had grown a somewhat-fondness for N/A beer. Shepherd, a recovering alcoholic, is a frequent drinker of non-alcoholic beers in their household. While the amount of N/A beer their kids actually consumed is still unclear, it’s had enough presence in their lives they’ve apparently tried to order one for themselves in a restaurant before.
I’ll stay out of the debate on whether kids that age should really be consuming N/A drinks of any sort, except to say who among us hasn’t had one of our offspring pick up an adult beverage we were drinking and take a sip out of curiosity? I still remember 7 year old me picking up my dad’s Manhattan (his cocktail of choice) with a gulp, the taste so revolting to my taste buds that I don’t think I drank another for at least 30 years. It has been argued that alcoholism is less prevalent in countries with more open attitudes toward underage drinking in moderation, de-stigmatizing it early.
But, that’s all besides the point. Kristen Bell may have inadvertently helped shine a spotlight on non-alcoholic brews, her family becoming unlikely spokespersons for the burgeoning category. And if that helps more people discover that N/A beer is more than just O’Doul’s and a bunch of uninspiring options, that’s a good thing.
