Our N/ATION Review:

The original Black Butte Porter is an institution for dark flavor-craving craft beer fans. It’s also the beer that started it all for Bend, Oregon-based Deschutes Brewery, an employee owned mainstay in the craft world since launching in 1988. The company has gone all-in on the non-alcoholic movement, investing heavily in equipment and infrastructure to support its growth, with the Black Butte NA, and an NA version of their Fresh Squeezed IPA as initial offerings (through a partnership with Patagonia, Deschutes also recently launched the first organic non-alcoholic brew).

Our first impressions of the Black Butte were some great aromas as we poured it into the glass, something that not all NAs can deliver upon. We detected notes of espresso. At first sip, we tasted a little bit of molasses, which for us was a welcome development to what we had been hoping for. Finally, as this near beer began to warm-up, we noticed an enhanced, dark-roasted taste profile, so if that’s your jam perhaps you should let this one sit for just a bit after taking it out of the fridge.

As for where you can find it, Deschutes Brewery is working on expanding its already-significant national footprint. For specific availability, we’d suggest using their Beer Finder.
