Our N/ATION Review:
One of the more exciting beer releases of 2024, two iconic west coast brands with a shared vision of social responsibility teamed up to deliver the first certified organic non-alcoholic brew, Kernza Golden. It’s made from (and named for) the perennial Kernza grain which benefits soil health, and generally has a nutty, buttery flavor on its own. With a full-alcohol cousin called the Kernza Lager, both beers are brewed with regenerative organic ingredients. With the dual release, Patagonia and Deschutes Brewery set out to promote sustainable brewing practices and expand the use of organic ingredients in the beer industry.
Our first impressions of the beer from the pour were its light, golden color. At first sip, we found the Kernza NA to be exceptionally clean and crisp, with a flavor profile that reminded us of a dry, light-bodied German Pilsner. Using Helios and Adeena hops, the Kernza is made from Sustainable Beverage Technologies’ patented BrewVo system to remove the alcohol, the same process Deschutes also follows for their award-winning Fresh Squeezed IPA NA and Black Butte NA non-alcoholic beers.
